In March 2001 the 1971 Fund Administrative Council decided, notwithstanding the fact that a claim relating to additional cleanup had been rejected by the Court in charge of the limitation proceedings, to authorise the Director to settle the claim on the grounds that the clean-up had involved burried oil found in an environmentally sensitive area, which was also an important centre for inshore fisheries and mariculture.
